Prince Bravery and Grace, by Gail Ann Gross
Review by W.J. Rayment - In "Prince Bravery & Grace: Attack of the Wet Knights" we are treated to an allegorical war between a young prince and his arch enemies, knights dressed in shining armor and yellow raincoats. They plague his sleeping hours by sneeking up on him and wetting his bed. Gail Ann Gross has produced a fun, slender volume, a story that is inspiring and heartwarming that can be helpful for children dealing with the problem of bedwetting (nocturnal enuresis).
The story reflects the typical train of events of a child having to deal with bedwetting, embarrassment with friends, feelings of shame and frustration. Queen Mom and King Dad work to help Prince Bravery overcome the "wet knights". They try rewards, encouragement, restricting fluids, and more. While the Prince struggles with the knights, he leads a normal childhood, participating in sports and playing with friends.
Gail Ann Gross is a great hand with the witty phrase and the analogy. She makes the story interesting for parents and fun for children. Incidental humor gives the book a light touch that allows serious ideas to be conveyed as twists in the plot. Kids will laugh out loud at points, and parents nod their head when the king is inadvertently knocked on the head by a tool catalogue.
It is the catalogue incident that leads to the most crucial turn of events. Prince Bravery has been attacked frequently by the wet knights, and the parents finally realize that he needs an alarm to help him be aware of his almost hidden enemy. With the alarm he finds he can be awakened to do battle with the little men in silver armor and yellow raincoats. Finally, he is able to vanquish the wet knights.
Reading this book to a child during his bedwetting phase is an excellent way to get him not to be too tense and fearful about his problem. Many children are aprehensive about using the alarm. This book will help children to overcome that anxiety. The major character of the book is a boy, and indeed, boys tend to have bedwetting problems more than girls. Even so, the story will appeal to both sexes.
"Prince Bravery & Grace: Attack of the Wet Knights", by Gail Ann Gross, is strongly recommended for children working to overcome their bedwetting problem, especially if they will be using a bedwetting alarm.
