Malem Bedwetting Alarm Review

There are many highly featured bedwetting alarms, but the single tone bedwetting alarm is all you really need. The alarm unit is small, perhaps two inches, by two inches and a half inch deep. It has a single button on the side that, when pressed, shuts off the alarm. The unit pins to the front of a night shirt. A rubberized plastic tube surrounds the wires connected to the lead clip which is attached to the front of the child's briefs. The unit comes with two batteries, which is sufficient for considerable use.

The unit is generally small and not uncomfortable to wear, although it seems awkward at first. The adult should first attach the lead to the briefs, then let the child put them on, then attach the alarm to the nightshirt. When the briefs become moistened the circuit between the two leads is closed, causing the alarm to sound. The alarm is not jarring, but should wake the child. If not, it will wake a parent who can assist the child to handle a wet bed incident.

With my own child we also went through a routine at bedtime. My son practiced getting up in the middle of the night so he knew exactly what to do when the alarm went off. The first time he was bewildered and needed help. But by the third day, he knew what to do and only needed my help to readjust the bed and transfer the lead clip to a fresh pair of briefs.

The Malem basic alarm is easy to clean. The unit is quite durable, though at first we treated it as a fragile item. Several days after we had put it to use, I went upstairs to find the kids playing with it. My daughter was hiding it somewhere in a drawer or a closet, with the alarm leads touching (so that the alarm was sounding). My son then was racing as fast as he could to find it, and she was timing him on a stopwatch. You can believe I took it away from them. Ultimately, it held up well to constant use and just a bit of abuse.

Before buying the alarm, we had tried everything else, including techniques from books and articles. Because these techniques were not fully effective, my son was more willing to try out the alarm. The alarm did its work within about three weeks. The boy spent another two weeks with the alarm to make sure it had worked. Amazingly, my son was no longer wetting to bed.

This is an excellent product that worked for us.

The Malem alarm is available at Amazon.
